Matt Murphy of the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center does an Extended Column Test at 2000 ft. elevation on a west aspect of Eddy's in Turnagain Pass. The rain crust that formed January 7 is buried 2 feet deep at this elevation. Although it took one extra hit beyond 30 taps, the fracture propagated quickly across the column and the whole slab popped off...a surprising Q1 shear. We found 3-5mm surface hoar on top of this crust which most likely caused the dramatic failure.
