1. Have a drop off spot for when you come home. For example you could have a basket to drop your keys, mail, cell phone etc. Try to have the basket on a table near your entrance so that you could set your purse or anything else you may have down there too. If you have other random things that need to be put away through out the day drop them there as well.
2. Nip your housework problem in the bud. Ten minutes twice a day is usually enough to get your household chores done. Once in the morning that's when you could start a wash or put your dishes away. Then again in the afternoon or at night time, which ever is good for you? For these 10 minutes you could fold that load of laundry from earlier or empty out that drop off spot.
3. Have trash barrels in every room of your house. I noticed trash would have a way of piling up on a countertop or desk with no barrel at hand (the junk mail piled on my husband's desk is a good example of this).
4. Make a place for items you would like to donate or sell (mine is a basket with nice big handles). Let everyone in your family know where this place is so that when ever they come across something they no longer need they know where to put it. When the basket gets full you could store the items somewhere else like a spot in your garage or basement just make sure it is not too hard to access or you might just leave it there. Then when that pile becomes too large, make a trip to the local donation center or have a yard sale. This is a great way to give back or a great way to make your self some extra money.
5. Try to simplify your surroundings. - I'm sure your two hundred-piece collection of mugs is great (until you have to clean them). If you find yourself overwhelmed try to keep the things that mean the most to you and let go of the things that just make more work.
