Prosecutors & Politicians: Bush Dismisses US Attorneys

Center for American Progress Senior Fellow and Constitutional scholar Mark Agrast says that seven United States Attorneys have been dismissed or asked to leave their posts -- including several prosecutors who have been actively investigating politically sensitive cases involving government corruption or politically connected figures. These dismissals are legal - US attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President - but several of their replacements are highly questionable and their installation has been made possible by a loophole in the Patriot Act that for the first time allows the Justice Department to appoint replacements without Senate approval. A practice Agrast warns could be a dangerous turning point for the judicial system. For more on this issue please see Mark's column here: www.americanprogress.org WWW.AMERICANPROGRESS.org
