T. Rex or Tyrannosaurus Rex was a giant carnivorous dinosaur that existed in the Cretaceous period. Being derived from the Greek words 'tyranno,' 'saurus,' and 'rex,' T. Rex means a 'tyrant lizard king.' T. Rex was a bulky dinosaur with an exceptionally large head, balanced off by a long strong tail. It had short forelimbs but strong and large hind limbs. T. Rex must have been about 15 to 20 feet tall and around 40 feet long. Drawing the skeleton of an animal that existed around 85 million years ago is definitely an enchanting and fascinating experience. Here we provide you with guidelines to draw the skeleton of a T. Rex.
Things You Will Need
1. Pencil
2. Paper/ Canvas
3. Colors (optional)
4. Paint Brush (Optional)
We are considering the profile view of a standing T. Rex.
• Skull
i. Draw two large irregular oblong shapes.
ii. Ensure the two oblongs are joined at only one end.
iii. The two oblong shapes here denote the upper and lower part of the skull.
iv. Draw sharp large teeth between the two oblong shapes. Leave a few gaps or make a few teeth uneven to give it a prehistoric look.
v. Draw a few asymmetrical circles to denote the eye and nose sockets.
• Spinal Colum
i. Neck Vertebrae
a) From the base of the lower jaw, draw a curved line.
b) Double up the curved line to give dimension. Closely placed, draw small rectangular columns on the upper side.
c) Ensure the small rectangular shapes appear sharp and spiky at the edges.
ii. Ribs
a) From the center of the vertebrae column, draw long thin rectangular strips with pointed edges spreading across the spine section of the T. Rex.
• Forelimbs
i. Scapula
a) The scapula holds the forelimbs and aids T. Rex in its movements.
b) Draw a small round shape near the upper middle section of the spinal column.
ii. Limbs
a) Draw a horizontal line, extending out of the scapula, slightly bent inside. Double up the line.
b) At the end of the limb, draw two clawed digits or fingers.
c) The forelimbs of the T. Rex are much shorter than the hind limbs.
Note: Draw a pair of forelimbs
• Pelvic
i. Hip
a) From the rear end of the spinal Vertebrae, draw a kidney bean shape depicting the hip joint.
• Hind Limbs
i. From the base of the hip joint, draw a diagonal line and double it up
ii. Draw another vertical line extending out of the diagonal line and double up the line.
iii. Draw the phalanges or paws of the T. Rex and give the digits a sharp and pointed finish.
Note: Draw a pair of hind limbs
• Tail Vertebrae
i. Extend a long, strong, and erect line from the hip socket of T. Rex. Double up this line.
ii. The tail should be broad at the hip joint and should get narrower towards its end.
iii. Draw closely spaced vertical lines on the tail to depict the joints and give it the texture of a vertebrae.
iv. On each rectangle formed due to the vertical lines drawn, extend smaller spiny & prickly irregular shapes to give it a sturdy and mighty look.
Keep these basic guidelines in mind and enhance it further using shading, texturing, and your creative fantasy.
