EXERCISES FOR ALL SEASONS: Tai Chi

Alternating Feet Tai Chi Form, elbows near hips, left side view - 03/30/09 (Spring) In his essay "Discussions" (which appears in "Master Cheng's New Method of Self-Study for Tai Chi Chuan"), Prof. Cheng Manching youtube.com youtube.com youtube.com notes that his tai chi skills improved tremendously after he had a dream that his arms were cut off. His dream helped Prof. Cheng realize that the power of the legs and of the entire body has to be transmitted through the arms; the arms should not act independently of the central core of the body. Prof. Cheng gave expression to this realization in his poem "Song Of Form & Function:" "In push-hands the hands are not needed. The whole body is a hand and the hand is not a hand." [translation by Lo/Inn/Amacker/Foe] I had my own variation of Prof. Cheng's dream many years ago - - I imagined my elbows were attached or "loosely sewn on" to my hip bones, so my forearms couldn't move independently of my hips. Since then, I have been doing many variations of Prof. Cheng's Tai Chi Form with my elbows close to my hips / waist / abdominal area / tan-tien. I call these my "tan-tien / elbows close to hips" forms. When I practice this way - - with my elbows "attached" to my hip bones - - my forearms can't help but transmit the full momentum of the center of my body as I shift from leg to leg.
