Keys to Successful Composting: 1. Warmth, make pile big enough so it heats up. 2. Equal amounts of carbon and nitrogen or brown and green material (slightly more carbon material is best). Small amount of finished compost (buy at a local garden center). 3. Turning, promotes aeration and quicker composting of all material. 4. Moisture, add water. Don't let the pile get too soggy. Carbon-rich material or brown material, consists of dry yellow or brown leaves and grass, prunings, newspaper, twigs, sawdust and straw. Nitrogen rich materials or green material, consist of fresh green leaves and grass clippings, weeds, farm manure, coffee grinds with the filter and tea bags, and kitchen scraps, such as vegetables, melon rinds, eggshells and fruit.
